The Forgotten Planeswalker: The Tragedy and Legacy of Dyfed

In the grand tapestry of Magic: The Gathering lore, few characters have had as much impact—and received as little recognition—as Dyfed. A planeswalker of the pre-Mending era, Dyfed’s story unfolds in The Thran, a novel set thousands of years before the events of Dominaria or Phyrexia. While her name isn’t as well-known as Urza or Nicol Bolas, Dyfed’s influence on the multiverse is monumental. Let’s dive into her mysterious past, the role she played in shaping Phyrexia, and explore some intriguing fan theories about her fate and legacy.

Dyfed, as described on wiki

Who Was Dyfed?

Dyfed was a pre-Mending planeswalker—meaning she wielded godlike power and could traverse the multiverse at will. She’s described as calm, analytical, and deeply curious, especially about planes and lifeforms beyond her own. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Dyfed seemed to lack a lust for power or dominion; instead, she favored discovery and understanding.

Dyfed’s most infamous act was introducing Yawgmoth, then a mortal man, to the artificial plane of Phyrexia—a plane she discovered and later unlocked for him as a potential refuge and laboratory for his "healing" experiments.

The Tragic Catalyst of Phyrexia

Initially, Dyfed believed she was helping a visionary. Yawgmoth had charmed many of the Thran elite with promises of medical cures and power. But Dyfed failed to see the corruption at the heart of his ambitions. She even used her vast powers to create portals between Dominaria and Phyrexia, effectively giving Yawgmoth the keys to his future empire.

Eventually, Dyfed realized the horror she had unleashed. She confronted Yawgmoth after discovering his experiments and perversions of nature within Phyrexia. But it was too late—Yawgmoth had grown stronger and more cunning. In an act of betrayal, he trapped and killed Dyfed, sealing her fate within the very plane she had opened.

Her death marks a turning point in MTG lore: the final green light for Yawgmoth to transform Phyrexia into a nightmarish realm of flesh and metal. Without Dyfed, Yawgmoth might never have risen to become The Father of Machines.

Why Dyfed Is Fascinating

  • Hubris in benevolence – She was not evil, merely naïve, a stark contrast to the power-hungry archetype of many pre-Mending planeswalkers.
  • The cost of curiosity – Her desire to explore and aid others ultimately doomed her, and countless others.
  • A hidden legacy – Dyfed’s role in MTG lore is mostly behind the scenes, yet the ripple effect of her actions is vast. Every Phyrexian storyline—Mirrodin, New Phyrexia, March of the Machine—traces back to her.

Theories and Speculation

Because Dyfed’s appearances are limited, there’s room for speculation and theorycrafting:

1. Dyfed’s Essence Still Exists?

Some fans wonder whether Dyfed left behind a failsafe—perhaps an essence or contingency within Phyrexia to one day help dismantle it. Could some spark of her consciousness linger within the plane, buried deep beneath the Machine Orthodoxy?

2. Did She Create Other Artificial Planes?

If Dyfed discovered and shaped Phyrexia, could she have made other artificial planes that remain hidden? This opens exciting potential for future MTG sets—unknown realms with remnants of Dyfed's power or philosophy.

3. The Anti-Phyrexian Spirit?

Some posit that Dyfed’s spirit or spark may have inspired other planeswalkers to resist Phyrexia—like a legacy embedded in the very fabric of the multiverse, urging resistance to corruption.

Dyfed is one of Magic’s most tragic and consequential figures. A woman of great power and greater ideals, she became the unwitting catalyst for one of the multiverse’s greatest evils. Her story is a reminder that the line between discovery and destruction can be razor-thin—and that even forgotten heroes can cast long shadows.

With the return of Phyrexia in recent years, perhaps it's time Dyfed’s legacy was revisited more fully. Until then, we can honour her memory by remembering that in Magic, as in life, even the most well-meaning actions can shape eternity.

Tiny Rage, Huge Mistake: Why the Kobold Barbarian Diplomat is D&D’s Best Worst Character

Listen, we all have those friends. You know exactly the kind—players who show up at your D&D table with "unique" character concepts designed explicitly to test the sanity of their Dungeon Master (and the rest of the party). They're the people whose ideas range from hilariously impractical to absurdly ill-advised, yet somehow these characters become legendary. Enter, stage left (presumably tripping over its tail), the Kobold Barbarian Diplomat: a character idea so inherently flawed it circles back into genius.

What Exactly is a Kobold Barbarian Diplomat?

First, let's dissect this magnificent disaster. Kobolds are typically depicted as diminutive dragon-worshipping reptilian humanoids—basically dragons’ awkward, perpetually terrified little cousins. Standing at around two-and-a-half feet tall, they're known for their cowardice, cunning, and overwhelming desire to avoid combat unless drastically outnumbering opponents (ideally by at least ten-to-one odds).

Now, mix this inherently craven creature with the class most famously defined by muscle-bound, axe-wielding, rage-fuelled warriors: the Barbarian. A class known for rushing headlong into combat, screaming battle cries, and solving almost every problem with brute strength.

Finally, sprinkle in the spice of "Diplomat." Yes, diplomat. A figure whose primary method of resolving disputes is calm, persuasive negotiation, peace treaties, and thoughtful compromise.

If this recipe sounds like combining gasoline, matches, and a fire safety pamphlet written in Ancient Elvish, that's because it absolutely is.

Why It's Terrible (Let's Be Brutally Honest)

Where do we even begin? Firstly, size matters—especially if your combat approach typically involves wrestling trolls and hacking limbs off ogres. As a Kobold, you're essentially bringing a toothpick to a longsword fight. Your puny strength means attempting feats of traditional barbarian heroism is likely to result in you becoming dungeon graffiti.

And there's rage. Barbarian rage is legendary. It's the foundation of your strength, the fuel to your might. But imagine this boundless rage trapped inside a diplomat. How exactly do you negotiate peace terms when your inner voice demands you smash the table and gnaw on the envoy’s shinbone?

But the greatest mismatch here isn't the laughably small size or lack of imposing physicality. It's that you're playing a diplomat whose entire diplomatic toolkit boils down to a volatile temper, limited vocabulary, and the negotiating subtlety of a trebuchet. Diplomats typically utilize finesse, charm, and linguistic elegance. Kobold Barbarians, on the other hand, specialize in screaming incoherently, pounding things into submission, and occasionally remembering their own names mid-rage. You're basically bringing a grenade to a tea party.

Why It's Actually Awesome (Against All Odds)

Yet, despite the layers of laughable impracticality, this chaotic combination isn't just playable—it's brilliant.

This is a character who thrives on contradiction. The Kobold Barbarian Diplomat is essentially a walking paradox—like trying to convince the town guards you're "peaceful" while holding a blood-dripping axe and twitching uncontrollably.

Roleplaying as a Kobold Barbarian Diplomat injects immediate comedy and spontaneous joy into your gaming sessions. Every negotiation becomes a high-stakes comedy routine. Picture yourself, tiny and bristling, calmly explaining treaty details only to explode in volcanic tantrums at perceived slights like not being offered a booster seat. The rest of your adventuring party is forced into desperate damage control as you inadvertently set off diplomatic incidents with neighboring kingdoms by repeatedly threatening delegates' kneecaps.

This character archetype is actually brilliant because it forces innovation. You can’t just intimidate your way through encounters—you literally can't. You’re physically incapable of intimidating most enemies conventionally. So, instead, you invent wildly creative approaches, like charming an Orc warlord with heartfelt compliments or confusing a bandit leader by passionately advocating for universal kobold rights mid-skirmish. Moreover, the Kobold Barbarian Diplomat is the perfect underdog.

Everyone loves an underdog—especially one with oversized, misplaced bravado. Your character will draw empathy and protective instincts from the rest of the party. You'll frequently become the beloved disaster who bravely charges forward, brandishing peace treaties and tiny fists alike.

How to Actually Make This Work (Practical Advice)

If you're committed to the madness (and you should be), here are a few suggestions to survive and even thrive:

  1. Embrace Absurdity – Lean fully into the ridiculousness. Adopt an exaggerated diplomatic persona that completely clashes with your barbarian nature. Sprinkle sophisticated vocabulary into aggressive threats, like, "By my profound diplomatic authority, I WILL END YOU, SIR! (politely!)"
  2. Tactical Rage – Time your rage bursts strategically. Nothing throws opponents off balance like a seemingly calm negotiator abruptly launching into a full-blown barbarian frenzy.
  3. Invest in Charisma – Surprisingly useful for diplomatic efforts and hilarious juxtaposition when you shift gears into rage. High charisma amplifies your comedic potential and makes your character’s delusional diplomatic sincerity strangely persuasive.
  4. Team Dynamics – Warn your teammates. Your allies will love your antics but might hate unexpected diplomatic disasters mid-quest. Agree on signals for when negotiations break down—likely every five minutes.
  5. Develop an Iconic Catchphrase – Something excessively refined yet easily transformed into battle cries. “Diplomacy never looked so fierce!” shouted mid-battle guarantees unforgettable moments.

Sample Scene (Because Why Not?)

Picture your party at a tense negotiation with a warband of towering Goliath raiders. The scene is hushed, the stakes high. You, the Kobold Barbarian Diplomat, step confidently forward and declare:

"Esteemed giant ones, peace is within our grasp if only you acknowledge the ancient Kobold customs of—"

The leader interrupts you rudely, laughing dismissively at your stature.

Something snaps.

You erupt, flipping the negotiating table and screaming furiously about honour and manners. The raiders, baffled by your display, panic, trip over each other, and surrender in confusion. You've just negotiated a successful peace treaty through pure chaotic intimidation.

Your party applauds, baffled but amused.

Go Forth and Rage Diplomatically!

Yes, the Kobold Barbarian Diplomat is objectively a terrible idea—on paper. It defies every conventional wisdom and logic. But therein lies its brilliance. This character will not just entertain your group; it will delight, inspire, and surprise everyone involved. Your misadventures, fuelled by boundless enthusiasm and misguided diplomatic bravado, will create legendary moments your gaming group will talk about for years.

So, sharpen your tiny axes, iron your finest (but inevitably shredded) diplomat robes, and embrace the delightful chaos of being a Kobold Barbarian Diplomat. You’re proof that sometimes, against all logic, the worst character is actually the best character.

Welcome to the club, tiny diplomat. Rage diplomatically.

WAAAGH! The Science of an Ork Rush

This is me, Salazar, great and all powerful, about to enjoy some raw ork lunch.

WAAAGH! The Science of an Ork Rush

By Salazar, the Ancient Red Dragon and content creator at Bastion Games

Ah, Orks! The most boisterous, unpredictable, and delightfully destructive force in all of Warhammer 40K. Mere mortals may see them as mindless hordes, bumbling across the battlefield in a drunken frenzy of violence, but I—being infinitely more perceptive—see a carefully engineered force of nature.

Yes, dear readers, the Ork Rush is not just stupidly fun—it is science. And today, I shall enlighten you on why these green-skinned brutes are the most statistically absurd, probability-defying, and hilariously effective army in the grimdark future.

Step 1: The Mathematical Madness of the WAAAGH!

For the uninitiated, an Ork Rush consists of one simple principle: throw an ungodly amount of Orks at the enemy and see what survives.

  • Your average Ork Boy has a WS of 3+, meaning he will hit 2 out of 3 times in close combat.
  • With a Strength of 4, he wounds most infantry on a 4+, meaning half of those hits go through.
  • AP is low, but who cares? You're rolling dice in bulk.
  • Squad sizes are massive (20-30 models), meaning attrition is their enemy’s problem.

In essence, Ork math boils down to this: Make 100 attacks. Who cares if only 40% succeed? You’re still rolling more dice than your opponent has models.

Step 2: The Psychological Warfare of Green Enthusiasm

Orks don’t just play the game—they play you.

  1. They break your opponent’s resolve by flooding the board with an overwhelming number of models.
  2. They force engagement—your opponent has to respond to the wave of green.
  3. They capitalize on momentum—once Orks gain an advantage, they become unstoppable.

And let’s be honest, rolling that many dice is just plain fun. Even when Orks lose, they lose spectacularly—explosions, wild melee, and a glorious mess of tabletop carnage.

Step 3: The “If We Believe It Works, It Works” Rule

One of the most beautiful elements of Ork science is their reality-bending belief system.

Orks do not merely roll dice—they will them to succeed.

  • Red ones go faster. (Because Orks believe they do.)
  • Biggest Ork is the boss. (Because Orks believe he is.)
  • More Dakka = more kills. (Because Orks believe bullets will hit.)

Step 4: How to Counter an Ork Rush (Good Luck with That)

If you find yourself facing the Green Tide, here are your best (though likely futile) options:

  • Mass Firepower: Kill them faster than they can reach you.
  • Blast & Flamers: Weapons that hit multiple models at once are essential.
  • Movement Control: Terrain, chokes, and charge distance manipulation can slow their advance.
  • High AP, Low Volume: Do not try to trade blows—cut them down before they get to you.

But let’s be honest—no plan survives first contact with a horde of screaming, axe-wielding lunatics. You will lose models. You will watch an endless tide of Orks hurl themselves at your front lines with reckless abandon.

And worst of all? You will find yourself laughing along with them.

Final Thoughts: Join the Green Tide or Be Crushed By It

The Ork Rush is chaos incarnate—a battlefield philosophy that states:

  • “Enough bodies will solve any problem.”
  • “Victory is secondary to fun.”
  • “Dakka, dakka, dakka.”

For those who play Orks, the joy is not merely in winning—it is in creating the wildest, most unpredictable, and undeniably entertaining moments possible.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have an appointment with a particularly belligerent Warboss who insists his ‘Trukk goes fasta than my wings.’

Hmph. We shall see about that.

Magic: The Gathering – A Dragon's Eye View on Its Spirited Saga

Ah, Magic: The Gathering! A realm where even a dragon like me can find intrigue and complexity that rivals the cunning of my own kind. Yet, as I spread my vast wings over its ever-expanding universe, I can't help but notice the storm clouds gathering on the horizon. Don't fret; your fiery guide is here to navigate through these tempests with a flare of optimism and a few scorching critiques.

Magic, in its quest to remain the apex predator of trading card games, has spun a web as intricate as the most cunning of spells. The layers of complexity it now boasts could befuddle even the most scholarly of mages. It's a double-edged sword, really. On one talon, it entices the veterans, those seasoned wizards who thrive on intricate battles of wits. On the other, it daunts the fledglings, who might just turn tail and flee at the first glimpse of this behemoth.

And, oh! The power creep. A phenomenon as relentless as it is subtle, creeping up like the shadows at dusk, threatening to engulf the glow of well-loved strategies under its dark veil. It forces the loyal into a constant chase for the new, the shiny, the ever-more-powerful. It's enough to make a dragon guard his hoard with even greater paranoia, wary of diminishing the value of his treasures.

Yet, where there are shadows, there's also light! Wizards of the Coast, not ones to rest on their laurels, have unleashed initiatives like Pioneer—a breath of fresh air that might just be the incantation needed to keep the spirits high and the gates welcoming. And let’s not overlook the clever Mastery systems and the occasional benevolent reprint of beloved cards. Ah, to see old friends return is a delight indeed!

But the balancing act between the digital and the tangible is like walking a leyline—fraught with peril yet brimming with potential. As MTG Arena flourishes, drawing in souls from realms far and wide, it begs the question—can the essence of Magic, with its tactile joys and the gathering of kin, thrive in the glow of the screens?

Yet fear not, my fledgling mages and battle-hardened conjurors. The essence of Magic—its deep strategic gameplay, its rich tapestries of lore, and above all, its vibrant community—remains unscathed. As long as there are tales to be told around the crackling hearth of a game table, Magic will endure.

So, here we stand, on the cusp of yet another dawn. Will Magic: The Gathering continue to enchant, to challenge, to unite? If a creature as ancient and cynical as I can see the glimmer of hope, then perhaps, just perhaps, you should too.

The Art of Preparation

First and foremost, preparation is key. Imagine waltzing into a game night without knowing the latest expansions or meta shifts. Unthinkable! A dragon such as myself, with centuries of cunning and strategy under my scales, understands the importance of staying ahead. Read up on the latest rules, strategies, and releases. Bastion Games is your haven for such materials – a veritable treasure trove of information, if you will.

Mastery of the Game

Let’s face it, not everyone can boast the strategic mind of an ancient dragon. But you can come close. Sharpen your skills in a variety of games, from the epic tales of Dungeons & Dragons to the intricate battles of Warhammer. Diversify your gameplay, learn the strengths and weaknesses of each faction, and most importantly, understand that victory is not just about brute strength – though it certainly helps. It’s about outsmarting your opponent, a feat I accomplish effortlessly.

Etiquette of a Champion

Now, I’m not one to lecture on manners – I leave that to the lesser beings. However, there’s a certain finesse to being a gracious winner or a dignified loser. Remember, while crushing your opponents is undoubtedly satisfying, maintaining a semblance of decorum is what separates the true champions from the common rabble. At Bastion Games, we value sportsmanship almost as much as we value the sweet taste of victory.

Building Your Horde

No dragon is complete without a horde, and for you, that means amassing a collection of games and accessories. Bastion Games offers a vast selection, from the latest board games to the rarest miniatures. Remember, your collection is a reflection of your prowess. Invest wisely, and let your horde speak volumes about your strategic mind and refined taste.

Share your knowledge, learn from others, and build alliances that will serve you well in future battles. The camaraderie found in our local game store is unmatched, and networking with fellow enthusiasts will only enhance your gaming experience.

The Final Word In conclusion, domination of game night at Bastion Games is within your grasp. With preparation, mastery, etiquette, a robust collection, and community engagement, you too can achieve a level of greatness that, while never reaching my own, is commendable nonetheless. So, heed my words, aspiring champions. Visit Bastion Games, immerse yourself in the world of tabletop wonders, and perhaps one day, you’ll be worthy of standing in my illustrious shadow. Until next time, bask in the glory of your local game store, and remember – Salazar always knows best. Salazar, the ancient, glorious and most wise Red Dragon

A Dragon's Tale: The Grand Evolution of the Board Game Realm: Games Not of Your Ancestors' Leisure

The Enchanting Complexity and Allure of Modern Board Games

Ah, mortals! Gather 'round and bear witness as I, Salthazar the Magnificent, the most fearsome and intelligent Red Dragon in all the realms, recount my tremendous knowledged about epochs past, stretching back to the eras of the '90s, '80s, '70s, and even the mystical '60s, board games served as the cornerstone of youthful merriment. Yet, as the sands of time have flowed, a remarkable metamorphosis has unfolded within the realm of board gaming. This transformation transcends mere visual splendor; modern board games have been forged in the crucible of innovation, designed with a profound comprehension of what conjures true engagement in this venerable art. We now find ourselves amidst a renaissance of board gaming, a golden era that has bestowed upon us titles that soar far beyond the realms of Monopoly and The Game of Life, vanquishing the curses that once plagued these ancient classics.

The Superiority of Modern Conquests

The evolution in the craft of game design through recent decades is irrefutable. The days when a session of Monopoly would devolve into despair or the capricious fates in The Game of Life would cast a shadow over the evening's festivities are now but legend. We are witnesses to a board gaming renaissance, heralded by creations that captivate not only through their aesthetic allure but through their meticulous engineering for peak enjoyment. This golden age is marked by several advancements of note:

Era-Respecting Durations:
Modern games pay homage to your temporal riches. Titles such as Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride are masterfully crafted with a definitive conclusion, ensuring that each quest is both gratifying and harmonious with your chronicle.

Engagement at Every Turn:
Unlike the bygone eras where an ill-fated dice roll could render a turn mundane, games like Pandemic ensure that every action of the player weaves into the grand strategy and enjoyment, keeping the tapestry of the game vibrant and dynamic.

Inclusive Quests:
Modern board games cast aside the archaic practice of player elimination, ensuring that all participants remain engaged in the narrative until the very end. This evolution towards inclusivity spells a more enchanting experience for all.

Strategic Depth and Equilibrium:
The games of today blend the whims of fortune with the art of strategy, introducing mechanisms that maintain a balanced and engaging competition, regardless of early misfortunes.

Diversity and the Spell of Replayability:
With their variable setups and myriad strategies, modern board games promise a new adventure upon each summoning, encouraging a spirit of exploration and adaptability.

A Dragon's Tale: The Fiery Chronicle of Dungeons & Dragons

By Salthazar the Magnificent, the Red Dragon

Ah, mortals! Gather 'round and bear witness as I, Salthazar the Magnificent, the most fearsome and intelligent Red Dragon in all the realms, recount the epic saga of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). Yes, even a being of my infinite wisdom and power can appreciate the complexities of such a game.

In the Beginning: A World Without Fire

In the primordial age of 1974, before many of you were but a twinkle in a sorcerer's eye, Dungeons & Dragons was conjured into existence by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. These wizards of gamecraft, though not as formidable as I, managed to create a realm of boundless imagination. Much like my cavernous lairs, it was a place where treasures abounded and danger lurked in every shadow.

The Rise of the Role-Playing Phenomenon

D&D, my dear adventurers, was no mere game. It was a portal to other worlds, a canvas for mortal creativity. Players would assume the roles of mighty warriors, cunning rogues, or (dare I say) even powerful wizards. They embarked on quests, battled fearsome creatures (none as fearsome as myself, naturally), and amassed wealth and glory.

The Era of Expansion: More than Just Dungeons

As the years passed, like the countless treasures in my hoard, D&D grew and transformed. New editions unfurled, each more elaborate than the last. The realms of this game expanded far beyond dungeons, encompassing entire universes teeming with lore, much like the vast knowledge I possess.

The Digital Age: A New Lair for the Dragon

In an era dominated by what you mortals call the 'internet', D&D found a new lair. Online platforms and virtual tabletops allowed adventurers from across the globe to unite in their quests. I must begrudgingly admit that even a majestic Red Dragon such as myself finds this innovation rather... impressive.

The Cultural Resurgence

Now, in your modern age, D&D has risen like a phoenix from the ashes of obscurity. It has infiltrated your literature, your music, and even your moving picture shows. This resurgence pleases me, for it brings new tales to my ears and more potential treasures to my hoard.

A Dragon's Musings on D&D's Legacy

So, what does a being of my ancient wisdom and power see in the future for Dungeons & Dragons? I foresee it continuing to enthrall and inspire, much like my awe-inspiring presence. It shall evolve, grow, and perhaps one day, come close to matching the grandeur of Salthazar the Magnificent (though I highly doubt it).

Before I depart, remember this, oh mere mortals: While you may gather around your tables to play heroes in the fantastical realms of Dungeons & Dragons, none shall ever be as grand, as powerful, or as utterly magnificent as I, Salthazar, the greatest Red Dragon that ever soared the skies.

Roar in Laughter, for the Joke is Yours!

Until we meet in a game or on a battlefield (if you dare), I shall recline upon my mountain of gold, chuckling at your quaint little adventures. Fly high, brave adventurers, and may your dice roll ever in your favor!
